Cancer in New York

The use of cannabis will provide significant benefits for patients who are living with the symptoms normally associated with the presence of cancer.

Cancer

With every type of cancer, cells that form in some abnormal fashion begin to divide at a fast rate. That makes it easier for those cells to begin attacking other tissue. Since those cells can be carried through the bloodstream as well as with the aid of the lymphatic system, no part of the body is resistant. The result is that cancer can take the form of well over a hundred different diseases. Many of these diseases are identified by the part of the body where the tumor develops.

General Signs and Symptoms of Cancer

While in the earliest stages these different forms of cancer may exhibit no outward signs, they do eventually develop. Seeing a doctor when any of the following symptoms appear will make it easier to begin battling the disease while it is still in a relatively early stage:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Pain
  • Skin changes
  • Darker-looking skin (hyperpigmentation)
  • Yellowish skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Reddened skin (erythema)
  • Itching (pruritus)
  • Excessive hair growth
  • Change in bowel habits or bladder function
  • Sores that do not heal
  • White patches inside the mouth or white spots
  • Unusual bleeding or discharge
  • Thickening or lump in the breast or other parts
  • Indigestion or trouble swallowing
  • Recent change in a wart or mole
  • Nagging cough or hoarseness

While all these symptoms could indicate a problem other than cancer, do not take the chance. See your doctor immediately and get tested.

Medical Marijuana as Part of a Cancer Treatment Plan

Cancer comes in a variety of forms and is, therefore, a difficult disease to treat.Cannabis has received a lot of attention as it pertains to cancer in recent years. The principals at Citiva Medical have years of experience in this area and are excited to begin research on medicinal cannabis cancer treatment programs specifically designed for each unique variety and symptom of cancer.

Recent laboratory studies have shown that cannabinoids, particularly THC and CBD, may play a vital role in the eradication of cancer cells. Cannabis has long been thought to produce what is called apoptosis in cancer cells, or, in other words, causing cancer cells to turn cannibalistic on each other and thus essentially programming the cells to devour each other. There is certainly much more research to be done on the matter and because New York State has made it easier to conduct such research, Citiva Medical is committed to continuing it.

At the very least, studies have shown that adding cannabis-based therapies as an adjunct form of treatment can be quite beneficial, especially to assist in combating the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Cannabis has been proven effective in reducing nausea and increasing appetite during the course of chemo treatment and thus allowing the patient to gain weight by keeping food down and assisting in sleep patterns. Cannabis therapy has also been shown to provide pain relief as it pertains to cancer treatments and the side effects of late-stage cancer, thereby allowing for a better quality of life at these late stages of the disease.

One such recent clinical study result released in November 2014 indicates promise in treating High-Grade Glioma cancer cells. High-Grade Glioma is one of the most aggressive forms of human cancer. The study indicated “cannabinoids have been shown to specifically inhibit glioma growth as well as neutralize oncogenic processes such as angiogenesis.” Further explaining the benefit of whole plant versus isolated THC, the study showed that “Marijuana kills cancer cells in proportion to its dose and duration of treatment, and whole plant cannabis rich in THC was more efficacious than pure, lab-grade THC alone.”

Citiva Medical has partnered with oncologists in the New York area who seek to explore what we have seen reported for many years with regard to anti-tumor causing effects of cannabis-based therapy. Citiva Medical is developing protocols to work with each cancer patient’s oncologist to provide tracking and dosing information to each specialist as an adjunct treatment to chemotherapy and radiation and last line of defense for those who have exhausted traditional means of cancer treatment.

At Citiva Medical, we believe there is value in exploring palliative as well as anti-tumor effects of cancer treatments and will make these methods of treatment and products available in each of our clinics from the onset of opening.
